Did you know that if you take too much vitamin C, you are just wasting it because too much of vitamin C in the body will only get flushed out of the body system. In recent years, many health care companies have started to sell vitamin Cs that are timed-release. This means that if you consume a 1000mg vitamin C tablet, your body will not straight away be provided with the 1000mg of vitamin C. Instead, this timed-release function works to release a little vitamin C at a time so that your body has a chance to absorb it and not let it get flushed out. This way, you will be able to maximise the absorption of the vitamin.

I also read on a website called MayoClinic, where someone asked if too much vitamin C is harmful to the body. Apparently, too much of a good thing like vitamin C can in fact harm the body! Read this quoted text from MayoClinic about what could go wrong if you take too much vitamin Cs:

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is a water-soluble vitamin that supports normal growth and development. Vitamin C also helps your body absorb iron. Because your body doesn’t produce or store vitamin C, it’s important to include vitamin C in your diet. For most people, a small glass of orange juice and a cup of strawberries, a medium orange, or a serving of broccoli provide enough vitamin C for the day. Any extra vitamin C will simply be flushed out of your body in your urine. Still, it’s possible to have too much of a good thing. Although too much vitamin C from your diet is unlikely to harm you, megadoses of vitamin C supplements can cause nausea, diarrhea, kidney stones and inflammation of the stomach lining (gastritis). Rarely, too much vitamin C can cause faintness, dizziness and fatigue.

So the next time you know that you are consuming foods that are high in vitamin Cs or taking too much vitamin C supplements, take note and remember this little article. Stay well and stay healthy!
